Serving this year has given me a view of myself as a person other than as a senior citizen that should be staying at home. It has opened me up to the fact that I can still serve my community, country, as well as my family … and that I can make a small difference. I will always volunteer in some way the rest of my life. This experience has changed my perspective in ways I could never have imagined in the year before I joined. I now see myself as a woman on a mission to use the time that I have in a productive way to help others succeed.
Amber Moise, Class of 2008
This experience will be something I take with me the rest of my life. I was given opportunities and encouraged to do things I would have never done on my own. Both at my school site and during team activities I was challenged in fun and exciting ways. This not only provided me with great memories, but it also gave me experience I can use in the future when I need to take action or be innovative in my future career.
Harvest Bates, Class of 2007 and 2008
I don't think that I have ever had a job that I enjoyed as much as this year working with AmeriCorps! Even though I was busier than ever, I enjoyed it immensely. My family commented to me many times about how much I seemed to love doing this job.
I plan on continuing to help with service projects in my community and hopefully continue my education. This year has definitely changed me for the better. I now speak out when I have opinions instead of quietly sitting back and letting other people take the lead. This year has shown me that I can't just sit back and complain about things. I need to step up and make a difference and be a part of the solution. One person can make a difference; I can make a difference.
I have grown much during this service year and I will keep growing in the years to come thanks to my experiences this year with the Regional Service Corps.
Patricia Hight, Class of 2007
And after all, I do have AmeriCorps to thank, at least in part, for restoring in me the courage to go after the ultimate goal (or at least the next "ultimate" goal) -- a doctorate in history. The education award for paying off old debts is kind of nice, too.
Matthew Mitchell, Class of 2006 and 2007
I remember when I was young; I always questioned situations that seemed unfair, dangerous, hurtful and dishonest. I stood up for those unable or unwilling to do so for themselves and took risks that resulted sometimes in the loss of friends (which is a big deal when you're young and a peacemaker). Today and throughout this service term. I once again find myself in the position of standing firm, questioning, taking risks and even becoming a catalyst for change. As surprised as I always am at the journey that happens when individuals choose to step outside of the status quo and challenge the forces around them, or even within themselves, it is inevitably the most rewarding development when wings spread and people begin to fly.
Tears stream down my face as I close this chapter and reflect on the fact that I am actually thriving through the challenges and can honestly smile and know that every challenge is a highlight just waiting to unfold and guide me the next time ... so until next time.
